Paul Cederna, M.D.

Paul S. Cederna, M.D. is a Professor in the Section of Plastic Surgery, Professor in the Department of Biomedical engineering, and Associate Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System who specializes in reconstruction of complex wounds. By combining his clinical training in general surgery, microsurgery, and plastic surgery, he is able to incorporate creative solutions with technically challenging operations to solve the most difficult problems resulting from trauma, cancer, or burns.   Academically, Dr. Cederna  has a very active basic science research lab investigating mechanisms of peripheral nerve regeneration following injury and repair.  He has recently received a $5,500,000 from the Department of Defense, Army Research Office, for the development of a totally biointegrated peripheral nerve interface to allow closed loop neural control of an upper extremity prosthesis. He has also recently been awarded a $3,300,000 grant from DARPA to translate this basic science research into human applications. Dr. Cederna has received over $17,000,000 in research funding, authored 110 scientific manuscripts, published 14 book chapters, presented his work over 250 times at national and international meetings, and has been asked to give over 135 extramral presentations. He has received over 55 national research awards either as first author or mentor of the reseach work. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Research Council, Past-President of the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, Past-President of the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons, an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and is on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and Plastic Surgery Foundation. Dr. Cederna has been recognized for his clinical accomplishments and is currently listed in the “Best Doctors in America”, the “Guide to America’s Top Plastic Surgeons”, “American’s Top Doctors”, and America’s Most Compassionate Doctors”.
